White Chapel Cemetery and Crematorium

Tags: Cemetery, West Hamilton, Westdale

Address: 1895 Main Street West
Date Built: 1929

"White Chapel Memorial Gardens and Crematorium is situated on the former property of pioneer Harcar Lyons. The property was purchased in 1927 for the establishment of a private cemetery to be known as 'Westmount Memorial Park Cemetery', owned by H. G. Binet, part of the early 20th century's Memorial Park movement."

"It was first used in 1929 for the burial of Ellen Jackson. In 1949 the cemetery was sold to Memorial Gardens of Canada, a for-profit cemetery corporation which remains the owner of White Chapel. There are various sections in the cemetery, while all markers are required to be flat with bronze or brass plates." 1

The cemetery is now home to approximately 16000 monuments.

Deep in the cemetery, nestled against the escarpment, lies the Temple Garden. This section of the cemetery is of particular historical interest because the columns in the garden were rescued from the 1860 Wentworth County Court House. The columns were placed in 1957, during the demolition of the 1879 court house.
